What the
Fairies Knew In the fairytale of The Sleeping Beauty, popularized by the Walt Disney animated version, three fairies attend the christening of the long-awaited princess, Aurora. Each comes bearing a gift such as beauty and intelligence. Also in attendance is a not so friendly fairy who feels quite snubbed (I wonder why!) at not receiving an invitation. She places upon the child a curse that at her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The good fairies, realizing that the damage had already been done, decide to place another spell over the princess so that she will merely sleep a hundred years upon pricking her finger until awakened by true love’s kiss. We can’t protect our children from the dangers of this world or from the pain that belies the human experience. But we can grant them the spiritual empowerment that will help them to triumph over the human experience. We can grant them any gift and instill in them an unshakable faith in those gifts. And it can begin before birth. If you are expecting, you needn’t wait for a christening or for fairies to grant your child the qualities or aptitudes that you wish for them. You can choose and communicate them now…with clarity and intent. And these are gifts that he or she can carry a lifetime. So give it some consideration. Would you wish for your child the gift of influence, compassion, or healing hands? Would you hope they embody joy, equanimity, or artistic talent? You may even want to connect with your unborn child and ask them what gifts they are choosing to bring into this world and acknowledge those as well. The fairies in Sleeping Beauty understood the power of intent and the power of the word. Thankfully three of them were well-versed in spell-casting with integrity. This might not have spared
